The Sacramento Mountains, near Alamogordo, New Mexico, is the southernmost tip of the Rocky Mountain chain within the boundary of the United States, and as such is not subject to the drastically cold temperatures of the upper ranges. Alamogordo, NM climate is more moderate than other desert areas because of its high elevation and proximity to the mountain range, which provides shelter from the wind’s cold as well as cooling rain showers in summer’s heat. With elevations ranging from 4,300 feet to 9,000 feet, Alamogordo has an ideal climate of warm days and cool nights. Home to 350 days of sunshine each year, winter days stay comfortable with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. The Tularosa Basin averages 15 inches of precipitation per year, and 315 days are precipitation free. The months of July - August get approximately 6 inches of moisture, while the mountain areas average 32 inches of precipitation and 92 inches of snow. It is an ideal place to build your new home.
At the northern end of the Chihuahua Desert lies a mountain-ringed valley known as the Tularosa Basin. Rising from the heart of this basin is home to one of the world’s great natural wonders — the glistening white sands of New Mexico, located only 15 miles from Alamogordo, and only 5 miles from Holloman AFB. White Sands is the number one National Monument attraction in New Mexico. Here, great wave-like dunes of gypsum cover nearly 300 square miles of desert. The dunes are ever changing, building, cresting, then slumping, but always advancing. Slowly, relentlessly, the sand covers all. White Sands National Monument preserves a major portion of the world’s largest gypsum dune field, along with the plants and animals that have successfully adapted to this harsh environment to call it home. The Monument is located on U. S. Highway 70. Formerly known as the Space Center and International Space Hall of Fame, this facility operates as a part of the New Mexico Office of Cultural Affairs and was opened in 1976. This attraction’s home is the third most visited museum in New Mexico. The neighboring Clyde W. Tombaugh Space Theater is outfitted with a new 40-foot wrap-around OMNIMAX screen and audio system. Visitors tour a model 2001 space station. Also, adjacent to the complex is the John P. Stapp Air and Space Park with a collection of historic space items such as the Sonic Wind I rocket sled. The Space Center is just off Highway 54 in Alamogordo. This is one a many attractions in the area.
Desert Lakes Golf Course is a true “desert” beauty with the Sacramento Mountains in the background. Alamogordo Public Schools is ranked second in the state of New Mexico and services an approximate student population of 7,162 in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. With 427 full-time classroom teachers, the district’s overall student/teacher ratio is 16.8:1. There are 16 schools associated with the agency, which is classified as being in or near a large town having a population greater than 25,000 (Alamogordo, NM). The Public Schools allocates approximately $2,972 per pupil for instructional expenses and will graduate students prepared with the knowledge and skills essential to function in society. The City of Alamogordo is closely linked to Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range. Holloman Air Force Base recently became the new home to the F-22A Raptor, the Air Force’s newest fighter aircraft. Its combination of stealth, maneuverability, and integrated avionics, coupled with improved supportability, represents an exponential leap in warfighting capabilities. The Raptor performs both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions allowing full realization of operational concepts vital to the 21st century Air Force. The 46th Test Group at Holloman manages the ten mile-long, high-speed test trackāthe longest, most precisely surveyed and best instrumented track in the world. The Test Group also operates a Global Positioning Systems test bed, radar signature test platform, and is building a Magnetic Levitation (MagLev) track.
